Michael Hotka's
C/1973 E1 (Kohoutek) Comet Observation

Observed on December 10, 1973 at 9:00 PM

I remember this comet very well. Before it reached perihelion, it was developing a nice tail. I was a second year astronomy/physic student at the University of Iowa and was using the 18 inch cassegrain telescope on top of the Physics building to view and use the tracking to mount my camera on to get some nice pictures of the comet. I viewed this comet on several cold Iowa nighs as I was fascinated with the predictions. It was predicted to be outstanding in the evening sky after perihelion, but once on the other side of the Sun, was very dim and small. A dim reminder of the comet as it was before perihelion. I was very interested in getting before and after pictures of this comet. The news media was really advertising this comet and when it didn't behave as a normal comet, I heard no more about it.
